Gary Warburton, DDS, MD, FACS

Dr. Gary Warburton is the Interim Dean at Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD). He is Professor and past Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. 

 Dr. Warburton has dedicated his career to advancing patient care, education, research, and institutional growth. In his current roles, he has guided major initiatives involving clinical expansion, the development of ambulatory surgical facilities, the creation of innovative community partnerships to improve access to emergency dental care, the growth of residency and fellowship programs, interdisciplinary collaboration across dentistry and medicine, and philanthropic efforts supporting resident training, development, and research.

 In addition to his appointments with UMSOD and University of Maryland Medical Center, he holds a secondary faculty appointment in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

 Dr. Warburton is internationally recognized for his expertise in temporomandibular joint surgery and maxillofacial trauma reconstructive surgery. His clinical practice also has included orthognathic surgery, pathology, and reconstructive surgery, and he has maintained an active faculty practice as well as extensive involvement in resident education. His leadership extends across numerous health system committees focused on clinical quality, perioperative services, operating room governance, physician leadership, and strategic planning.

 Originally from Manchester, England, Dr. Warburton earned his dental and medical degrees from the University of Manchester. He began his surgical training in the United Kingdom and came to the United States to complete a clinical research fellowship at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research within the National Institutes of Health, as well as residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery and general surgery at UMMC.

 He is certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a fellow of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

  • He was named in the Baltimore Magazine’s “Top Dentist” list for 2014.
  • He is an Associate editor for the International Journal of Oral Surgery and a reviewer for numerous other peer reviewed journals.
